Why learn some Dutch phrases?

If you’re in a new country and need to get around, the best thing you can do is know a few words. 

Even in countries where most people speak English, you’re likely to run into someone that doesn’t – believe me. 

And if you need help with finding your transportation, or you end up lost at the wrong train stop, knowing some of the language will be a life-saver.

So one of our favorite things to do before heading to a new place is to learn a few of the local words and phrases.

And while Dutch is not the easiest language to pronounce, it will definitely get you some brownie points at the very least!

Please – Alsjeblieft

Excuse me – Excuseer mij

Airport –Luchthaven

Help! – Helpen!

I don’t speak Dutch – Ik spreek geen Nederlands

Do you speak English? – Spreekt u Engels?

Where is the bathroom? – Waar is het toilet?

One beer please – Een bier graag

Where is the pharmacy? – Waar is de apotheek?

Train station – Treinstation

How much is it? – Hoeveel is het?

I’m from ____ – Ik ben van_____.

Where is this address? –  Waar is dit adres?

I’m sorry – Mijn excuses

What time is it? – Hoe laat is het?

I’m allergic to ____ – Ik ben allergisch voor ____.

I love Netherlands! – Ik hou van Nederland!

And a bonus word – Proost – which means cheers! We heard everyone saying this during our liquor tasting at Wynand Fockink!

Dutch may be a hard language to get the hang of, but it will definitely be worth it once you know a few of these key phrases!
