The number one question I get about traveling is how to find the cheapest flight possible. And my response is usually the same – are you using the Skyscanner Cheapest Month feature?
Most of the time the answer is no!
But using Skyscanner to find cheap airfares is one of the easiest ways to save money on your vacation.
And all it takes is a little know-how and some flexibility! You can even download the app to make it super convenient!

How to Get Cheap Airfares
Finding that perfect (super cheap) flight is a huge accomplishment!
Like the time we flew from Miami to Berlin for $183. Or the time we flew from Marrakesh to Madrid for $21!
It makes you want to brag to everyone you know, right? Or is that just me? 😛
But here are a few tips on finding the cheapest flights possible, and some rules to live by:
- Have a flexible attitude – having set times and/or destinations can be very expensive!
- Book as early as possible – yes, sometimes prices do drop, but do you really want to leave it to chance?
- Do some research – don’t just book the first flight you see, no matter how good it looks!
Using “skyscanner cheapest month”
Okay, so here’s where the flexibility comes in!
You can be flexible with your destination by searching for flights to “everywhere” or you can set a specific destination and find the cheapest month to go there.
But you absolutely cannot find the cheapest flight possible if you need to travel on exactly April 27th at 9 am. Chances are you’ll end up paying quite a bit for that one.
While you’re searching, make sure you keep an open mind and try to use your vacation days wisely.
Think about:
- Taking advantage of long weekends
- Looking for holiday flights
- Booking flights late at night to prevent losing time
So here are the exact steps I use to take advantage of Skyscanner’s features for cheap flights!

1) Clear your cookies
Search engines and websites usually use cookies to track your activity on their sites.
Which means they know if you’ve been searching for the same flight 100 times already – and you really need the flight.
Every wonder why flight prices go up seemingly overnight?
Supply and demand, my friend.
So before you start searching for flights, clear your browsing history, especially your cookies!
2) Set your destination
Now head over to Skyscanner.com and add in the airport you’re flying out of.
Notice below how I checked off the “nearby airports” – I always keep this option checked and have found some really great flights leaving from smaller airports.
And for the destination, I choose “everywhere,” but don’t worry, you can totally use this with a specific destination.
Sometimes I even set the entire country as the destination and see which airports are the cheapest to fly into!
3) choose the date
Okay, now for the good part!
Instead of setting a specific date, I click on the “Whole Month” tab.
This will unlock the “Cheapest Month” button and you can set that as your date!
You’ll be able to see when is the cheapest time to fly to a specific place, or the cheapest time to fly anywhere in the world!
Perfect for planning vacations on a budget!
You can see here that the cheapest place to at the moment from Fort Lauderdale airport is North Carolina in the United States – for only $29!
For demonstration purposes though, I’m going to choose Panama. Let’s see if this works for international travel also 😉
You can see below that there’s a flight to Panama City for $56 – not bad at all!
And if you click on the arrow, you’ll get to see which month (and the days out of the month) are the absolute cheapest!
From here you can click into the dates and find the flight that works best for you.
For example, this flight to Panama City is $56, but another one on that same day is $295 – yikes!
So by booking the first one (which leaves at 11 pm) I save $239! A perfect way to maximize your vacation days!
By using the Skyscanner Cheapest Month feature, you can see these cheap flights appear every time you search – instead of picking a day at random and ending up with a flight that costs 3 times as much!
Setting up skyscanner alerts
Another great way to find the cheapest airfare is to set up Skyscanner alerts.
Basically, you can set an alert for any search you’ve already made.
So for instance, let’s take our Panama example..
I know I want to buy, but I’m not ready to commit quite yet.
Maybe I’m not quite sure about the destination, or maybe I need to request my vacation days from work. But either way I want to keep an eye on the flight, just to be sure I don’t miss out!
In this case, I can set an alert to let me know about any price changes. And if the price goes up a little, I might book it sooner so that I don’t lose out on the deal.
Here’s how to set up Skyscanner alerts!
1) perform your search
This time I already have the search done, but if you’re starting from scratch, you’ll need to put in all your search criteria first.
You can even set multiple price alerts for different places to help you decide on your final destination when you’re ready to book. This is super helpful, especially when you’re doing a lot of research an need a way to keep track of it!
2) sign up for alerts
You will find this at the top left corner on desktop and the bottom left corner on the Skyscanner app.
Then you’ll need to log in (or sign up) and voila! You’re all set to get alerts whenever the price changes!
This is so handy so that you don’t miss out on flights you’re interested in.
